Paulette Baron H&S250Paulette Baron
Award Winning Bead Weaving Teacher

Paulette Baron has been beading since 1994, and shortly after began teaching bead weaving classes in the Washington, D.C. area. In addition to teaching around her home base, Paulette has also teaches at the Bead and Button Show, Bead Expo, and at Bead Fest.

Having earned her Fine Arts degree from Carnegie Mellon University, she became a Graphic Designer. But it was when she became involved with beads that she found true calling. Her need to be creative and to work with colors and design had finally found a home. She has become known for creating three dimensional sculptural pieces of art out of beads. Her pieces utilize different sizes and shapes of beads and are made using a wide assortment of off-loom bead weaving stitches.

Pinwheel-Garden-376

Paulette’s studied drawing and illustration, and always had trouble in three dimensional sculpture class. The teachers would always remind her about the back of the sculptures (you don't think about the back of things in a drawing). When she first started bead weaving everything was flat and 2 dimensional, like a drawing. Taking a freeform peyote class, she realized that working with different sizes and shapes of beads, she could create 3 dimensional sculptural forms. She started creating amulet pouches and vessels using freeform peyote. Experiments with shaping the vessels, lead her to try to sculpt three dimensional forms, and the twisted peyote and brick forms are the result.

Making those tiny little seed beads into 3 dimensional forms has become Paulette’s goal. She is not happy with flat beadwork, it has to have structure, texture and stand up off of the table.

Paulette’s freeform sculptural brick stitch work is featured in Diane Fitzgerald's book, "Beading With the Brick Stitch." Two of her freeform sculptural peyote creatures are in the 2005-2006 traveling exhibition "The Beaded Figure."  Paulette is one of the artists featured in the Japanese publication “The Best Collection of Beadweaving Stitches by 9 American Bead Artists by Kumiko Mizuno Ito. Her Pinwheel Garden necklace won 2nd place in the 2005 Bead Dreams exhibit and appeared in the 2006-2007 Dairy Barn International Bead traveling exhibit. This necklace will also appear on the title page of Margie Deeb’s new book, “The Beader’s Color Palette: 20 Creative Projects and 220 Inspired Combinations for Beaded and Gemstone Jewelry” to be published in the summer of 2008. She was also asked to create a new piece for this book.

She now has a website www.paulettebaron.com which features her beadwork and classes that she teaches. She also sells kits on her website of many of her projects

Although Paulette has become well known in the beading community, she still strives to create unique and original pieces that will both satisfy her need to create and keep her students busy with new projects.

Paulette lives in Potomac, Maryland with her husband and two kids, ages 15 and 17 (who occasionally show an interest in beading - if they want to make some money!)  She also designs and sells strung jewelry at home shows. She could actually make more money selling necklaces and bracelets, but beadweaving is so much more satisfying for her creativity.
